The hike on Wednesday is canceled because rain is forecast.
Wednesday excursion: On July 16, 2025, we are planning an excursion to Schöckl mountain.
Please indicate at the registration desk whether you will be joining us (alone, or with +1, +2 or however may companions) for the excursion, and, in particular, for lunch on the mountain. This indication is not binding. You can still join us spontaneously on Wednesday. We just want to have an estimate of the size of our group to communicate to the restaurant on Schöckl.
We will proceed by bus to the village of St. Radegund, some 15km north of Graz (ca 40min by bus).
From St. Radegund it is a hike of approximately 2 hours (for healthy, but not particularly athletic people) or up to 3 hours (for the elderly, infirm, and seriously out of shape couch potatoes) to the top of Schöckl mountain (about 700m altitude difference).
Alternatively, you can take a cable car (Schöckl Seilbahn) up the mountain, instead of hiking.
On top of Schöckl mountain there is quite a large plateau, so that those who take the cable car can still go for a nice walk on the mountain (about 1 hour for the whole circuit around the North side, West peak, South side, East peak, and back to the cable car station).
We are then planning to have lunch in one of the several restaurants on Schöckl.
Meeting times on Wednesday: we meet on Jakominiplatz, corner of Gleisdorfergasse, at the bus platform M (on the lower right of the map) to take bus 250 to St. Radegund bei Graz.
We meet in three groups (to arrive on the mountain at the same time, despite different speed of ascent), at the follwoing times on Wednesday
- 08:15am (slow hikers)
- 09:15am (average hikers)
- 10:15am (cable car users)

Bring a water bottle (no source of water on the way during the 2 hour hike). Wear hiking shoes suitable for an uphill walk on a trail through the woods, a bit rocky in places (but not really alpine or anything).
From the top of Schöckl, we will enjoy a nice view in several directions. The terrain is mostly level, but rocky in places. There are also wheelchair accessible boardwalks.
Do wear good shoes (and socks)! Hiking boots or, at least, walking shoes whose soles have a good tread. Also, a drinking bottle will be useful. Think about sunscreen. Note that it is frequently windy on top of the mountain; even if it is hot in Graz, a jacket may be indicated on the mountain.
There are several restaurants on Schöckl mountain; we will have lunch together on the terrasse of one of them. Afterwards, we can go for a walk on the top of the mountain, or descend individually to St. Radegund, either on foot or by cable car. There is a bus from St. Radegund back to Graz every hour until 8pm. The cable car operates until 6pm.
We will leave for St. Radegund, Seilbahn Talstation (15 km north of Graz) by bus together Wednesday morning starting from Jakominiplatz (bus platform M, at the corner of Gleisdorfergasse), by bus 250. The bus trip takes 40 min and costs about EUR 7 each way. The first group (slow hikers) takes the bus at 8:20 (meeting time 8:15), the second group (average hikers) the bus at 9:20 (meeting time 9:15), and the third group (cable car users) takes the bus at 10:20 (meeting time 10:15).
Like this, we should all be on Schöckl around 12 noon, and can then have lunch together.
Please be aware that the lunch is not included in the conference fee. We will "go Dutch".
